The toco toucan is the largest and best-known of the roughly 40 toucan species, with a black body, white throat, blue-ringed eye and an enormous orange-yellow bill tipped with a black spot. The bill can be 20 cm long, about a third of the bird's total length, yet it is surprisingly light because it is made of a thin keratin shell over a foam-like bony core. Unlike most toucans, which live deep in rainforest, the toco prefers open country: savannas, forest edges, river corridors and plantations across central South America. It nests in tree cavities and usually travels in pairs or small groups.

How Long Do Toco Toucans Live?
Toco toucans are estimated to live 12–20 years in the wild and 20–26 years in captivity. Wild lifespans are not well documented. In human care they are prone to iron storage disease, so zoos and keepers feed them special low-iron diets to help them reach old age.

An adult toco toucan weighs 500–876 g (1.1–1.9 lb), making it the heaviest toucan. Males are slightly larger than females. The huge bill accounts for very little of this: it makes up only about one-twentieth of the bird's body weight.

The toco toucan is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List because of its very large range, although its population is thought to be decreasing. Threats include habitat loss to agriculture, capture for the pet trade and some hunting. It tolerates disturbed habitats better than most toucans.

Why do toucans have such big beaks?
The bill serves several purposes. It lets a toucan reach fruit at the tips of thin branches, acts as a radiator to get rid of excess body heat, and probably plays a role in display and in intimidating smaller birds when raiding their nests. It is of little use as a weapon.
Do toco toucans make good pets?
For most people, no. Toco toucans need a very large aviary, a fresh fruit-based low-iron diet, and constant cleaning because their droppings are frequent and messy. They do not talk like parrots, they are expensive, and keeping them is restricted or requires permits in many places.
Is a toucan's beak heavy?
No. Although it is about a third of the bird's length, the bill makes up only around 5 percent of its body weight. It is built like a hard foam sandwich: a thin outer sheath of keratin plates around a lightweight network of bony fibers and air spaces.
Can toco toucans fly well?
Not especially. Toco toucans have short, rounded wings and fly with a burst of heavy flaps followed by a glide, usually over short distances between trees. They spend most of their time hopping along branches and rarely make long sustained flights.
