Butterfly vs Moth: What’s the Difference?
The main difference between butterflies and moths is the antennae: butterflies have thin antennae ending in a small club, while moths have feathery or tapering antennae with no club. Most butterflies fly by day and rest with wings closed upright; most moths fly at night and rest with wings spread flat or folded like a tent. Both belong to the insect order Lepidoptera.

Key differences
Antennae
This is the most reliable test. A butterfly's antennae are slender stalks with a distinct knob or club at the tip, as seen on the monarch. Moth antennae are either feathery, like small combs, or thin and pointed. Male luna moths have especially broad, feathery antennae, used to pick up the scent of females from far away.
Active hours
Most butterflies are active in daylight and need sunshine to warm their flight muscles. Most moths are active at dusk or at night and warm up by shivering their wings. There are many exceptions, including day-flying hummingbird moths and burnet moths, which is why time of day is a helpful hint but not proof.
Resting posture
A resting butterfly usually folds its wings together upright over its back, showing the undersides, though it may open them flat to bask. Moths generally rest with the wings spread flat against a surface or folded roof-like over the body. Most moths also link their front and hind wings with a tiny bristle called a frenulum.
Pupa
A butterfly caterpillar transforms inside a chrysalis, a hard, smooth case with no silk covering, often hanging from a stem. The monarch's chrysalis is jade green with gold dots. Many moth caterpillars spin a silk cocoon around the pupa, as the luna moth does among fallen leaves, while others pupate in a chamber underground.
Body and color
Butterflies tend to have slim, smooth bodies and brightly colored wings. Moths are usually stouter and furrier, with hair-like scales that help hold heat at night, and many wear camouflage browns and grays. Not all do: the pale green, long-tailed luna moth is as striking as any butterfly.
Diversity
Moths vastly outnumber butterflies. Roughly nine out of ten known species of Lepidoptera are moths, with butterflies making up a single branch of the family tree. In evolutionary terms, butterflies are best thought of as one specialized group of day-flying moths, not as a separate, equal lineage.
How to tell them apart
- Check the antenna tips: a small club means butterfly; feathery or plain pointed antennae mean moth.
- Note the resting pose. Wings held closed and upright suggest a butterfly; wings flat or tent-like suggest a moth.
- A thick, furry body points to a moth, while a slender, smoother body points to a butterfly.
- An insect circling a porch light at night is almost always a moth.
